Home News & Insights Halston opens doors with 5sum’s modern–timeless restaurant identity
A new dining experience that lives between eras — where modern craft meets timeless character.
When Halston, an ambitious new restaurant concept, approached 5sum, the brief was simple yet profound: create an identity that feels both modern and eternal. The result is a brand that redefines classic hospitality for a new generation — one that values design, detail, and atmosphere as much as taste.
The essence of contemporary timelessness
In a world of fleeting food trends and visual excess, Halston was conceived to slow things down. The restaurant’s philosophy is rooted in craft without pretension — a belief that elegance lies in restraint, and that every detail should invite familiarity rather than distance.
5sum translated this sensibility into a brand system that balances heritage with innovation — timeless serif typography paired with contemporary spatial layouts, soft neutral tones layered with textured materials, and a tone of voice that speaks quietly but confidently.
The new brand evokes a feeling of presence — a space where stories, flavors, and design coexist in calm harmony.
Designing the experience beyond the plate
For 5sum, Halston’s identity was not limited to visuals. It was a complete experience design exercise, covering every guest interaction: from the sign at the entrance to the weight of the menus, the rhythm of digital motion, and the tactility of the print materials.
The logo, an elegant wordmark with sculpted ligatures, reflects crafted permanence. It’s distinctive without shouting — designed to live naturally on wood, fabric, glass, or screen. Supporting patterns were derived from architectural elements found in the restaurant’s interiors — arches, light gradients, and shadow grids — creating a visual continuity between brand and space.
Typography choices merge the charm of tradition with the clarity of modernism. The serif typeface draws from mid-century European forms, while the secondary sans-serif injects balance and lightness. Together, they create a duality that mirrors Halston’s culinary approach — classic techniques, modern execution.
Material-driven identity
Every design choice is rooted in material truth. Menu cards use heavyweight, textured paper stock. Coasters carry embossed details. Even the receipts are printed in a muted, minimalist typeface. Each tactile decision reinforces the brand’s values: permanence, texture, and quality.
For the restaurant’s digital presence, 5sum extended the identity into motion — slow fades, cinematic pacing, and gentle parallax movements evoke the experience of dining itself: immersive, sensory, and deliberate.
A dialogue between interior and identity
5sum worked closely with Halston’s architectural team to ensure that branding and spatial design spoke the same visual language. The color palette was drawn directly from the space — terracotta stone, brushed brass, smoked oak, and linen white. These tones translate effortlessly between physical and digital environments, giving Halston a cohesive aesthetic identity.
Lighting design also influenced the brand’s mood. Warm gradients and low-contrast photography reflect the glow of an evening dinner — intimate, cinematic, and alive.
“We didn’t want to design for a trend; we wanted to design for memory,” says 5sum’s Creative Director.
“Halston isn’t a restaurant that chases novelty — it’s a place that feels like it’s always been there, waiting to be found.”
A new standard for hospitality branding
Halston’s collaboration with 5sum demonstrates how thoughtful design can redefine the dining experience — not through extravagance, but through intentional restraint. In every gesture — a typeface choice, a menu fold, a website transition — there’s a sense of care and calm confidence.
The result is a brand that transcends time. One that feels equally at home in the past and the future — a modern classic built to last.
